Indo Western menswear is the fastest evolving layer in the cosmos of ethnic clothing for men. Men’s ethnic fashion has undergone a paradigm shift in the last decade or so. Today, menswear is not restricted to an embellished kurta or a traditional sherwani. Concepts of the Jodhpuri suit or the Angarakha kurta or jackets etc are being widely explored today. Be it a galabandhsuit or an achkan kurta – whatever style one may choose to sport, it must compliment the glamor, grandeur and extravaganza of a big fat Indian wedding. It should also be unique and customized just for you!
Jodhpuri Suits of Galabandhs
The bandhgala or galabandh or Jodhpuri suit fuses ethnic style of clothing with western cuts. A Jodhpuri suit consists of a pair of formal trousers and a fully buttoned, high-collared coat under a shirt. It is the perfect example of a product that was created under the patronage of the Rajputs. It was in the mid-19th century when the royal tailors of the Jodhpur estate of Rajasthan created the first version of this outfit by incorporating British concepts of tailoring in traditional fashion.
Achkan Kurtas and Jackets
An achkan kurta is a knee-length jacket, buttoned all the way down. It usually has a slanting button line, like the Angarakha style. Achkans in solid shades may be paired with formal trousers and shoes to create a formal look. Achkans also come in light fabrics and pastel shades and floral prints which makes them very popular for morning weddings in summer.
The achkan kurta was first adopted by the royal Sikh, Maratha and Rajput clans as wedding wear. Today it is being worn by Indian men during wedding ceremonies or other formal festive occasions.
The Angarakha Kurta
The Angarakha kurta can be traced back many years before the arrival of the British in India. The unique feature in this type of kurta is its closure mechanism which runs through one side of the kurta instead of the middle. The Angarakha kurta was worn by Indian men before they were aware of the concept of structurally tailored clothing. It was from the British that Indian tailors learnt the concepts of fit and cut, use of shoulder pads etc. It was the royal tailors who were given the job of developing a new outfit which looked like the Angarakha and also has a proper fit and shape. With the invention of the camera, men of the royalty, nobility and upper class became even keener on appearing more put-together in portraits. The Angarakha evolved in a myriad ways to become a well-cut, well-tailored type of kurta, much like the achkan kurta, only longer.
Use of Jackets and Waistcoats
The concept of layered clothing – that is, the use of jackets or waistcoats, often called the Nehru jackets – is a western concept. Pairing them with kurta-pajama sets, sherwani kurtas etc creates an Indo Western style.
A groom can sport a rich Jodhpuri suit on his reception night or the evening of the engagement. He can also go for a brocade achkan kurta and trousers for these occasions. On pre-wedding functions like the sangeet he can wear a semi-formal Angarakha kurta or achkan kurta. For post wedding pujas or get-togethers he can appear in a casual avatar by wearing a cotton kurta-pajama set in any pastel shade paired with floral or jacquard waistcoat.
Colors like white, cream or ivory are both popular and suitable for both day and night events. Jodhpuri suits in darker hues like royal blue, charcoal, grey, beige, khaki etc look very masculine at all times. Also, contemporary Indo Western outfits like achkan and Angarakha kurtas in floral prints are becoming hugely popular in case of day functions related to weddings.
The general rules in case of menswear apply here as well! The good news is that Indo Western menswear encompasses a wide variety of outfits and there is no fixed rule for the use of fabric. So, if you are attending a function in winter, you can opt for outfits in heavy silks, brocades and velvets. In summer it is better to go for fabric options like cotton, linen, chambray, raw silk etc.
