Short Sherwani

A traditional sherwani is one that consists of a long kurta topped with the sherwani jacket, usually worn with churidar bottoms and a stole, on most occasions! However, one might not like to always carry a 100% traditional look. In that case, you can definitely go for a version of a short sherwani! Confused? Read on to find out!

The sherwani, as we know it today, is believed to have originated during or right after the Mughal times. After that, over the years, variations of the sherwani have evolved some of which are – achkan or the Jodhpuri suit! A short sherwani can be described as a cousin of the Jodhpuri or Bandhgala suit!

A short sherwani is different from a bandhgala suit in many ways! The bandhgala is a typical example of Indian wear inspired from British clothing and hence has a very well-tailored look with clean cuts and angles. Moreover, it usually comes in monotones and sombre colors like black, white, brown, navy, grey etc – in fact, the color palette isn’t much different from that of formal suit! On the other hand, a short sherwani boasts different types of colors and embellishment that a traditional sherwani usually has – ranging from embroidery, zardozi work, zari work, sequin and stone work etc. It comes in heavy fabrics like brocades, velvet, raw silk etc. The only difference between a traditional sherwani jacket and a short sherwani is the length of the garment!

Short sherwanis are different from traditional sherwanis or Anarkali Sherwani also when it comes to the bottom wear! With traditional sherwanis – be it anarkali style, angarakha or straight cut – churidar bottoms look the best! With short sherwanis, knee-level or above knee, you can go for more innovative styles by pairing them with straight or tapered trousers, cigarette pants and even dhotis! You can also flaunt a short sherwani jacket over a slightly longer kurta. You can combine it with accessories like stoles, turbans, pocket square and chain and mala.

Though you can wear a short sherwani for your wedding function by pairing it with a grand dhoti, ornate stole and turban, it is a great option for pre and post wedding function. If you are not the groom but the groom’s brother or the bride’s best buddy, a short sherwani is definitely your kind so of thing! It’s a comfortable and fuss-free compared to a full length traditional sherwani and ensures that you enjoy the wedding festivities to the fullest!
