Kurta Pajama

The kurta pajama is the most basic ethnic menswear ever! But that does not make it boring. In fact it is the classiest Indian men’s outfit that can be flaunted with ease. From simple every day wear to embellished wedding wear – kurta pajamas can serve all kinds of wardrobe needs!

The kurta pajama came to South East Asia from Central Asia, according to experts like Roshen Alkazi, with the Muslim conquests of the late 12th Century. Later on, during the Mughal era, it became a staple with Indian men. The kurta has a strong resemblance to the qaba of the Ghaznavid period that was worn by Mongolian and Persian men. The qaba was a calf length tunic with long sleeves and a loop near the left shoulder acting as a closure. This knot-and-loop closure mechanism is believed to have inspired the angarakha style kurta which originated during the Mughal times. This style is considered to be the predecessor of the modern kurta.

Over time, the kurta has been paired with different types of bottom wear. It can be paired with a salwar, a tapered trouser, a churidar bottom and of course, with the pajama. Kurtas can vary in length and the bottom wear should be decided accordingly. While a lower calf length kurta looks good with churidar bottoms, to a dhoti, a shorter kurta does justice! But pajamas look good with every length.
